About Us

“These last few years Sean and his colleagues at Pareto Fundraising have pushed and challenged my thinking a lot, testing and overturning more than a few of my preconceptions about how fundraising should be done. But they consistently get astounding results. They don't just talk about growing effective voluntary action, they live it. Their commitment to clients and causes drives their every action, because that's how they've realised that they can change the world.”

Pareto Fundraising

Paul Roberts and Sean TrinerMost charities would like nothing more than to be able to focus all their resources purely on what they do so well: making our world a better place.

The fact is, doing a lot of good can require a lot of money. And raising that money is a full time job in itself one that many charities find just as difficult as changing the world.

Yet the truth is, raising money is pretty simple. All you have to do is identify the people who believe in your cause, and inspire them to want to help you for the rest of their lives. And if that sounds a little overwhelming, don't worry it's what Pareto Fundraising excels at.

Pareto Fundraising was set up by two expert and principled fundraisers, Paul Roberts and Sean Triner, in 2002. Their goal was to use their knowledge and expertise to help charities raise larger sums of money, so that those charities could deliver their crucial job of making life better for us all.

The process by which Pareto Fundraising team achieves this aim is unique. First, our analysts subject our charity partners' donor lists and fundraising results to a level of scrutiny we believe no other agency even attempts. Then, we use our expertise to identify exactly who their supporters are, what matters to them the most and how much they can afford to give.

Next, it's over to our creative and strategic experts, who use this incredibly valuable information to create an integrated fundraising plan with highly personalised communications that make every supporter feel just how valued they are as an individual. Whether the communication is in person, online, in the mail or over the telephone our goal is to ensure that the relationship between donor and charity is mutually rewarding.

In this way, the right people are asked in the right way for the right amount of money and our charity partners end up with motivated donors who give throughout their lives and beyond.

The Pareto Principle:

Eighty per cent of your income comes from 20 per cent of your donors. Focusing your limited resources on the most important 20 per cent of your donors will have the most impact on growing your fundraising income.

The Pareto Way:

We use a data-led, evidence-based approach to develop fundraising strategy and tactics that have been proven to be the most effective. What does data-led mean? It means being donor led. We understand donor behaviour because we have the data about how donors behave.

We treat donors as the special and unique individuals they truly are. Pareto Fundraising has developed effective and meaningful supporter relationship management strategies and tactics. It's all about creating that special connection between donors and the beneficiaries they want to help.

We only give the best advice possible for the long-term interest of our charity clients' beneficiaries.

“My colleagues and I will always act in the best long-term interests of a charity's beneficiaries - not ours, not the charity's and not even the donor's best interests. What that means is that we give the best advice possible it's long-term and it's objective. And of course, what's in the best long-term interests of a beneficiary is usually also what's in the best long-term interest of charities and donors.”

Pareto Phone

If you need money to help your beneficiaries, you know that someday you'll need to approach members of the public and ask for it.

You could send out all your staff to meet the public and they would be able to talk passionately about your work and would probably do a great job. But that would be very expensive and you'd be diverting their skills away from the services you provide.

Using the telephone is great alternative, but often calls are dreadful. They're to people who didn't want to be called, and they risk making generous supporters feel awful if they do anything other than donate again.

We created Pareto Phone because we want to help charities have quality conversations with supporters. The kind of conversations that would help make supporters feel valued, regardless of the outcome. All of our telephone calls are handled with the supporter relationship in mind, which is why you should use Pareto Phone for your fundraising calls.

The Pareto Principle

The Pareto Principle outlines that 80% of donations come form 20% of the donorsVilfredo Pareto was an Italian economist who noticed that 80 per cent of the land was owned by 20 per cent of the population. Also known as the 80/20 rule, or the law of the vital few, the Pareto principle can be generalised to 'for most events, the majority of effects are caused by a minority of the causes'.

For a social inequality example, two per cent of the world's population 'owns' more than 50 per cent of the world's wealth. Other examples include the fact that a privileged minority of the population have access to the majority of health care, computer power, nutritional needs and so on.

From a marketing point of view, a majority of purchases are usually made by a minority of purchasers. And closer to home, at least 80 per cent of donations income will come from, at most, 20 per cent of your donors.

A final example for teachers 80 per cent of your problems will come from just 20 per cent of your students. Managers, just swap the word 'students' for 'employees'.
